About Hanna

A product of Denmark honed by Canada.

Painting was the reward waiting to be explored after parenting and retirement. Too consuming to be trifled with while doing other things. My early passion was singing, starting in childhood, and culminating in more than twenty-five years with Pacific Opera Victoria chorus, and performing in yearly solo recitals. Retirement from a satisfying law career and opera performance finally provided the time and the mental and emotional space for painting.

For me, painting and singing are closely related, and equally challenging. Both art forms are intensely personal, and require a large amount of emotional investment and, not least, courage. Form, colour, mood, texture, and gesture, are necessary ingredients. I find both to be expressions of my individuality, and my relationship to the world around me.

I take inspiration from the state of the world, from nature, especially from big dramatic skies, the play of shadow and light, and from the cadences, complexities, and beauty of music.

My paintings are often based on ideas and images formed during sleepless nights. However, while I keep the initial idea in mind, the act of creating a painting is experimental, and the piece may take on a life of its own depending on the materials, the colours and the tools I use. The process is, for me, as important as the result.

I love a rainy day then I can paint.
